Madison County Communicable Disease Totals
(This data is provisional and is subject to change.)

The Madison County Health Department (MCHD) started reporting communicable disease investigations in 1996, the same year the health deprtment was certified by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH).  By state law, several entities including hospitals, physicians and labs are mandated to report communicable diseases to public health.  Prior to 1996, if healthcare providers reported a communicable disease, they had to report it to the state health department as there was no county health department until 1995.

The Madison County Communicable Disease Totals for 1998-2003 reflect the number of investigations by MCHD staff.

In 2004, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) joined a national movement to improve disease reporting and tracking.  IDPH implemented Illinois-National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (I-NEDSS).  I-NEDSS helped local health departments accept electronic data exchanges from healthcare systems including laboratories.  The electronic system automatically runs algorithms to decide if a disease investigation will turn into a confirmed or probable case depending on that year's case definition.

Since 2004, the Madison County Communicable Disease Totals are derived from I-NEDSS and represnet actual cases, not investigations.  Even if a disease is reportable. the report does not reflect zero cases of a disease in I-NEDSS.
