MADISON COUNTY YOUTH FORUM

2017

The 17th Madison County Youth Forum was held on Monday, October 30, 2017 at SIUE.   This year's theme was "Stress Less" and focused on the topic of stress.  Prior to the Youth Forum, focus groups were conducted at the high schools to determine the origins, triggers, and problems of stress among teens.  At the Youth Forum, participants spent part of the day in discussion groups led by Madison County Youth Board and Eta Sigma Gamma National Health Education Honor Society at SIUE discussing their assigned stress topic and developed 2-3 reasonable recommendations to address the problem and make an impact.  In the evening, each group reported their problem and recommendations to a panel of invited county officials and community leaders which led to interaction and commitment to help make some of the recommendations a reality in Madison County.  The four topics discussed were expectations and responsibilities, drama with friends and peers, having a say within the school, and societal troubles being placed on students.  The 2017 Madison County Youth Forum yielded several quality suggestions as well as igniting the passion and commitment of the panelists and youth participants.   The Madison County Youth Board has chosen two recommendations to develop and implement this year which included:  student polling for input at schools; college and other options assemblies; and continuing promotion of the Madison County Sheriff's Tipline.  Panelists, Schools, and Eta Sigma Gamma (National Health Education Honor Society at SIUE) will also help develop and implement the Youth Forum.

2015

The 16th Madison County Youth Forum was held on Monday, November 2, 2015 at SIUE.   This year's theme was "Hugs Not Drugs" and focused on the topic of substance abuse.  Prior to the Youth Forum, focus groups were conducted at the high schools to determine the top 4 substances and today's problems with substance abuse.  At the Youth Forum, participants spent part of the day in discussion groups led by Madison County Youth Board and Eta Sigma Gamma National Health Education Honor Society at SIUE discussing their assigned drug and either access to or influence on use of that drug to develop 2-3 reasonable recommendations to address the problem and make an impact.  In the evening, each group reported their problem and recommendations to a panel of invited county officials and community leaders which led to interaction and commitment to help make some of the recommendations a reality in Madison County.  The four drugs were alcohol, marijuana, tobacco (especially chewing tobacco, hookahs, and e-cigarettes), and prescription drugs.  The 2015 Madison County Youth Forum yielded several quality suggestions as well as igniting the passion and commitment of the panelists and youth participants.   The Madison County Youth Board has chosen four recommendations to develop and implement this year which include:  parent videos, Madison County Sheriff's Tipline promotion, Ask Alice, and countywide rules for substance abuse violations at schools.  Panelists, Schools, and Eta Sigma Gamma (National Health Education Honor Society at SIUE) will also help develop and implement the Youth Forum.  2015 Madison County Youth Forum Recommendations
